By now, she was used to the rogue’s shadow-play. At first, the younger woman had been able to get the better of Aveline, startling the warrior whenever she’d pop out from seemingly nowhere, but after a while, Aveline had come to expect Hawke’s presence wherever she was least likely to be found.

Whenever Hawke began one of their interactions with a compliment (or several), chances were, she was planning to ask her old friend for a favor. This instance seemed to be no different. Almost reluctantly, she took the offering and popped one of the grapes into her mouth, but not before taking a quick look around to ensure that nobody was watching.

Whether she’d admit it or not, she did have a reputation she liked to maintain. If she’d been seen eating on the job, the lowlifes in Lowtown would hardly run in fear from the once formidable and fearsome guard captain. No, that wouldn’t do at all.

”I’m afraid you’ll have to remind me about this ‘deal’ of ours.“
